چکیده
9 We report a simple fabrication technique of polymer microfibers with high surface smoothness and length uni10 formity using a molten polymethylmethacrylate in conjunction with direct drawing technique. With the aid of 11 fabricated polymer microfibers, we successfully demonstrate a new splicing technique via a two-step process. The 12 fabricated microfibers with diameter of 1.5 μm and length of 3 mm have been used in splicing the silica micro13 fibers based on solvent vapor spray and flame treatment process. Permanent splicing has been achieved after 14 fusing the silica fiber via flame treatment, and the polymer fiber is removed. We were able to obtain an average 15 splicing loss of about −0.69 dB. Using the same technique, we also demonstrated splicing for ring resonators. The 16 splicing technique demonstrated in this work promises high potential for robust optical integration of microfibers 17 for various functional circuits and devices. © 2015 Optical Society of America

Investigation of Temperature Sensitivity of a Polymer-Overlaid Microfiber Mach-Zehnder Interferometer
The temperature sensitivity of the free spectral range (FSR) for a polymer-overlaid microfiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The waist diameter of the optical microfiber can be controlled to alter the thermal expansion and optic properties of the polymer-coated MZI. Inserting an optical microfiber with a strong evanescent field into the...
متن کاملFabrication of poly (ϵ-caprolactone) microfiber scaffolds with varying topography and mechanical properties for stem cell-based tissue engineering applications.
Highly porous poly (ϵ-caprolactone) microfiber scaffolds can be fabricated using electrospinning for tissue engineering applications. Melt electrospinning produces such scaffolds by direct deposition of a polymer melt instead of dissolving the polymer in a solvent as performed during solution electrospinning. The objective of this study was to investigate the significant parameters associated w...
متن کاملTeflon-coated microfiber resonator with weak temperature dependence.
A temperature insensitive three-turn microfiber coil resonator (MCR) is demonstrated by embedding it in Teflon with opposite thermo-optic coefficient. The temperature dependence of a MCR strongly depends on the microfiber size which controls the ratio of thermal effect contributions from silica and polymer. Fabricated from a ~3μm-diameter microfiber, the temperature dependence of our MCR is com...
متن کاملChallenges of Probiotics Microencapsulation by Spray Drying Method
Introduction: In the recent years, attention to the use of probiotic drugs and probiotic food products, due to probiotic’s functional and health properties has been increased. The storage and the viability of the probiotics in the products and passing through the gastrointestinal tract was always a big challenge. Drying is one of the functional and important choices that can be used for stabili...
متن کاملMicrofiber Bragg Grating for Temperature and Strain Sensing Applications
Fiber Bragg grating is inscribed on microfiber with femtosecond laser pulses irradiation. The microfiber is fabricated by stretching a section of single mode fiber over a flame. Periodic grooves are carved on the microfiber by the laser as have been observed experimentally. The microfiber Bragg grating is demonstrated for temperature and strain sensing, and the strain sensitivity is improved wi...
